The chief chippie chiselling away in his workshop on the third floor of the Chocolate Factory II (now renamed ARTSPACE II) in Wood Green, London N22, is Matthew Lewin who, for the past five years, has been indulging – virtually full-time – a lifelong passion for working with wood and making things.

He wasn't always a woodworker though. Matthew worked as a journalist and writer for 34 years, first in South Africa and, from 1970, in London where he rose to become the editor of the Hampstead and Highgate Express local weekly newspaper. He has also written a number of published novels – some under his own name but also with the pseudonym Lew Matthews.
